Summer Driving

Driving in Jordan during summer is straightforward, as the weather is generally calm. However, be aware of: • Road constructions • Animals on the road • Tire punctures on gravel roads Temperatures in mid-summer can exceed 38°C (100°F). If you're not accustomed to the heat, plan for breaks and stay hydrated while exploring Jordan's outdoor sites.

Winter Driving

Winter driving in Jordan is a different experience. From October to March, temperatures drop, and rainfall is more frequent, with occasional snow and flooding. Drive cautiously and avoid unnecessary risks in severe weather conditions.

The Road

Stay alert for pedestrians and animals, especially when driving through cities or desert areas. In urban areas, dogs, cats, and people often cross the roads, while in rural areas, camels and other animals may appear on highways.

Off-roading is strictly prohibited in Jordan to protect its delicate natural landscapes. Stick to paved roads.

In Jordan, vehicles drive on the right side of the road. Always keep to the right unless overtaking.

Road signs in Jordan are in both Arabic and English, and speed limits are displayed in kilometers per hour (km/h). Watch for signs indicating speed limits, sharp bends, or other hazards.

• In towns: 50-60 km/h • On highways: 90 km/h Some signs indicate sharp curves or hills ahead, so reduce your speed as needed.

Road conditions in Jordan vary. While highways are generally well-maintained, other roads may have potholes or uneven surfaces. Stay attentive to the road conditions.

Due to Jordan’s geopolitical location, checkpoints and police checks are routine. If stopped, pull over slowly and present your passport and car documents as requested.

Maintain at least 1.5 meters of distance when passing cyclists.

Your Safety

Jordan may appear small, but travel times can be lengthy. Take breaks on long trips to stay alert.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is prohibited in Jordan.

Avoid stopping on the side of the road unless it’s an emergency. Stopping in traffic to take photos can be hazardous—choose safe spots for sightseeing and photos.

Drivers are responsible for securing children in appropriate car seats. AutoNation Car Rental provides high-quality child seats for rent.

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, including those in the back seats.

The Car

While headlights aren’t required during the day, use them in low visibility or at night for safety.

First, you drive on the right side of the road, so that should be a huge relief for the majority of our customers.

Jordan offers two fuel types: 90 and 95 octane. Select the correct type, and attendants at gas stations will fill the tank for you.

In Jordan, it is not mandatory to keep your headlights on during daylight hours. However, it’s recommended to turn them on when visibility is low, such as during dusk, dawn, or in adverse weather conditions. If another driver flashes their lights at you, it may be a reminder to switch on your headlights for safety.

Breakdown Iceland

BREAKDOWN OR EMERGENCY

Breakdowns and other emergencies can unexpectedly occur on the road. In such unfortunate situations it is important to react correctly.

ROAD AND TRAFFIC SIGNS

Like anywhere else in the world, traffic signs play an important role when driving in Jordan. There are a lot of them, and we do not expect all foreign visitors to recognise them all. Fortunately, most of them explain themselves. It is important that drivers respect them and drive accordingly.
